Books I would not say that the SlutWalk movement represents all of feminism, not by a long shot, but it’s an example of the kind of conversation that we need to be having more about sexual and gender politics. Tanya Horecky, a founding member of the Toronto chapter of SlutWalk, decided to put together a volume of essays by activists, organizers, academics and feminists of various stripes, in order to better our understanding of the issues that have become central to social justice in Canada and around the world. This two-part workshop was held at Wilfrid Laurier University’s Cofounder of the Centre for Feminist and Lesbian Studies, March 15-16, 2001. I will be participating in a panel on “Sexual Equality, Gender Politics and Violence: Towards a Critical Theory of Sexuality and Liberation” at the Canadian Association for Sexuality Studies conference in Toronto (CASSS) November 30 – December 2. I will be in conversation with some of the other speakers on this panel: Susan Moller Okin, Mariko Tamaki, and Lisa MacKenzie. To mark the 30th anniversary of the second wave of the women’s movement, the author looks at the differences and similarities between radical feminism and lesbian feminism and argues that radical feminism and lesbian feminism are fundamentally compatible and complementary. Feminism’s challenge is to examine the ways in which mainstream feminism can become enmeshed in a wider process of depoliticization, and the ways in which radical feminism can and must continue to put the issues of class and race back on the agenda. Lesbian feminism, however, has evolved significantly since its first formulations in the 1970s. Rather than being focused on heterosexuality, and on the relationships of heterosexual women, it has expanded to include lesbian and bisexual women, and gay women and men.
